Sitting With Susan
Sitting with Susan. My mom. I got to spend some time with just her the other night. I sat wrapped in a blanket. And she sat snug in her leg-elevating chair. I can't say that either one of us are good at sitting. But we are great at talking. And laughing. And spending time together. We talked about how the past week went, adjusting to being at home. How the little things that we typically don't think twice about doing, are the hardest things for her to do right now. How life keeps us on our toes. Or off them.
We talked about her Dotson and my Brody. How old dogs seem to soothe the soul. They make the best kind of friends to just sit with when you can't do anything else but sit. The room might be quiet but it was always a comforting quiet just having them there. Our most loyal companions. We talked about how much we miss them.
The next morning before I left, she read me her quote of the day by Charles Dickens and I thought about it the whole drive home, "Have a heart that never hardens, a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts." ❤
Every cloud has a silver lining. Sitting with Susan is mine.
