Plan, Prepare, Perform.
I often get asked how we prepare our family's nutrition for the day. Each day might ask something a little bit different from us, making our nutrition prep dependent on our goals and our plans for that particular day. It's all a matter of thinking ahead for what you expect- which maybe include some unknowns- throughout the day.
Over the weekend, one of my boys had a hockey jamboree about an hour away. The jamboree consisted of seven games, each game around 20 minutes long. That's a lot of hockey for a little person and a long enough drive for our little ones to ask, "Are we there yet?" and tell me, "Mommy, I'm hungry. " about 100 times.
My goals: have healthy options ready for everyone; including some options for the little athlete before, during and after his games.
Some examples:
Quick fuel before/in-between games: PBJ's on whole wheat, apple slices, fruit purees, honey-wheat pretzels
On the road: Ferner Fuel Boxes (I create these for my children. An example of this includes sliced veggies, fruits, almonds, and meat-avocado roll ups), banana/zucchini mini-chip muffin, popcorn
Always: Water bottles ready
Thrown in there is food prepped for the baby along with Joe and I. Us grown-ups have to be fueled and prepared ourselves if we expect to happily perform as parents and as people. :)
Eat.Grow.Bloom bright, my children.
Eat.Train.Live well, my friends.
Fuel purposefully,
EK Ferner, RD, LDN :)
